Ottenby Nature Reserve is run by The Swedish Ornithological Society and visitors can observe researchers collecting data and birds being caught in the mist nest and funnel traps on site.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

This is the story of Fox’s experiences on board the Achiever, the research vessel of the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. It’s a small group of 10 to 12 researchers and crew members, and Fox is the sole person responsible for the bird surveys. Although we are not close nor on a direct course, the geese are skittish.

New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. A PhD student was presenting her research into the population in Westland, the relic population of Grey Duck. I mentioned 2008 as the year I became aware of the issue.
