One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting.

The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates. The species is classified as Near Threatened for all the usual depressing reasons – pollution, drainage, hunting, and the collection of eggs and nestlings ( source ).

Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). One of the primary reasons that these hawks make such excellent falconry birds is because they are one of only two raptor species (the other is the Galapagos Hawk ) that hunt cooperatively.

What can your pup do to exercise their mind, if they aren’t involved in the pack’s hunt? Problem-solving skills are as good for your dog as they are for you, and it’s always a delight to see your canine companion beam with pride when they have “won” their game. As a result, even games of catch give your puppy more to think about.
