The specificities of languages … Anyway, so Germany this year is essentially filled with mice, like the one shown here, which – so far as I know – is a vole where you come from. In Germany, our most common large mammalian predator is the Red Fox Vulpes vulpes. No “gophers” etc.

Owls, the debait

She got out and began taking photos and quickly realized that the owl was being baited with white mice. But as she stayed and mice were being tossed out, she decided it wasn’t for her, and she left the birds, and the group. I question the release of non-native mice into the wild. My own take on that mirrors it.

Cats, along with other introduced mammals, are genuinely a problem in New Zealand in a way they aren’t in most of the rest of the world (Australia has similar problems mostly with foxes and cats). It’s undermined his own laudable efforts to clear the Antipodes of mice.

Mammals of South Asia (Lynx Edicions)

Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets. On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions !

Birding Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town

The gardens also have some mammals, although for the most part you’ll need to show up very early if you want to have any hope of seeing Cape Fox , Caracal and Cape Grysbok. I have seen unconcerned Cape Grey Mongoose and Four-striped Mice though. The Forest Canary is one of several that can be found in the area.

I have a dog, cats (domestic and feral), birds raccoons, hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, bunnies and mice…they all share the yard and the woods. And if we are going to count cats as part of nature, they’re like a foxes or coyotes. Cats are a breathing warm blooded creature like so many others.
