European Red Foxes were brought into Australia in the 1850′s for recreational hunting and soon spread rapidly. The European Rabbit was also introduced for hunting by early settlers and it soon bred and became highly invasive. Like the European Rabbit they degrade the soil and eat the vegetation and need to be controlled.

What human can point out a fox hidden nearby and how to avoid it? A female red-tail may leave a nest to hunt for her two chicks and return to feed a rabbit to three chicks without noting an increase in the number of chicks a rehabber has placed there. Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber.

But as she stayed and mice were being tossed out, she decided it wasn’t for her, and she left the birds, and the group. One wouldn’t tether a rabbit out to get a shot of a fox or a coyote, or is that somehow different?

Everyone talks about human rights and there exists so many groups that are either governmental or non-governmental who work toward that cause. In the Far East they keep birds of prey which they use to capture other animals such as foxes and rabbits. But, what about the rights of those who cannot defend themselves?

Nonetheless, they adjusted their behavior to allow Babyl to remain with the group. Caledonian crows live in small family groups and youngsters learn to fashion and use tools by watching adults.

Paul and I led our group down into the marsh where we quickly encountered many Nelson’s Sparrows, a single Saltmarsh Sparrow, and a great many individuals that we could not identify to either. Now called “New Inlet”, this area makes for easy access to to some of the marsh grass habitat along the sound side of the island.
