From our base, which has been Foster for most of the time and Fish Creek over recent weeks, I have walked the stretch of Rail Trail from Foster to Fish Creek several times. I have walked from Foster to Fish Creek and back in a day or just walked in one direction or shorter sections from either end. Eastern Whipbird.

Now, although I have seen this species several times before, we have a unique relationship. Instead, I shimmied across to a nearby fishing depot and tried to make the most of the dramatic dawn light. Discerning both species is relatively straightforward if they are seen together, if the observer concentrates enough on feeding pattern.

Last month we went camping and birding north of Broome and headed into the Northern Territory in search of some bird species that we had not seen yet this year. Some of the bird species we had observed already this year and they were on the 2016 year list , but we had not been able to photograph several of them at such close quarters.

Upon arrival we were given strict and non-flexible rules: never go even one inch off the ice paths, never allow the tiniest piece of litter to escape, never interact in any way with the wildlife, and cause absolutely no environmental damage. The justification was ridiculously laughable: in order to further study the species.

I applaud responsibility, but please don’t litter.) Sure, migration was in evidence — both Kinglet species present, Hermit Thrushes everywhere, White-throated Sparrows tuning up their songs in such abundance that they provided an ongoing soundtrack, American Robins and assorted blackbirds on the move. C’mon, guys.

We have previously called these birds Beach Thick-knees , but as with so many species around the world in recent years they have had their names changed. The resident Pied Oystercatchers were feeding on the mud as the tide continued to fall and the Brahminy Kites circled over the creek looking for fish.

But some species remain elusive when they shouldn’t be. Even a big trip to Canada, though it turned up many other delightful species ( Boreal Owl , anyone?) The husks of box elder seeds littered the ground, neatly stripped and devoured. Fish and Wildlife Service. Wood Stork and White Pelican.
