Thanks to groups like Alley Cat Allies, outdoor and feral cats have become above the law. Neighbor A’s private property and peace of mind are both suffering because of the cats, which are killing government-protected species. Outdoor/feral cat people are bullies who prey on people unable to fight back, just as their cats do with birds.

I’d been volunteering at rescues through my young adulthood, and I was training as a cat socializer, teaching terrified felines — the unlucky victims of cruel people — to trust humans again. The Stephen’s Island Wren suffered a fate common to many island species of birds around the world. Humans, and the rats, pigs, goats, dogs, cats, snakes, mosquitos and disease they bring with them have wiped out species after species on islands. The wren’s existence as known to humans was all too brief. Gone forever.
