No Snow on Long Island

Redgannet was in town and had all day to get out looking for birds so I had booked us for the pelagic trip out of Freeport and our plan was to find his life Snowy Owl and then get on the boat and enjoy a host of alcids, gulls, and gannets. The owl, much to Redgannet’s dismay, was a no-show. Saturday was set aside for birding.

Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 1

According to the HBW, food brought by Siberian Blue Robins to nestlings in Japan was 36% adult insects, 28% insect larvae, 18% spiders, and 18% unidentified (I suspect the last mostly being unhealthy fast food with the discriminating labels ripped off). People who love moths may want to refrain from watching it though.

Twitching a Gray Kingbird in New York

We saw Common Gallinules , a nice male Rose-breasted Grosbeak , Bald Eagles , and a Great Horned Owl among the fifty-three species for our checklist. The long drive back to New York was filled by more lousy, incidental eBird checklists, more fast food, and more road kill. All was not lost though.

Winter Wanderland

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420. That was undoubtedly the sighting of the day – this striking red bird in a white and dark green landscape.
