Its great diversity of habitats hosts an incredible bird count of over 900 species, including Africa’s 2nd highest list of endemics and near-endemics (after South Africa). Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral. Yellow-billed Stork.

And, of course, by blackbirds I mean true thrushes of the family Turdidae , of which the Common (Eurasian) Blackbird ( Turdus merula ) is the most famous in European culture and folklore. Most saisons aren’t anywhere near as dark as this Common (Eurasian) Blackbird.

Early starts are the rule when monitoring endagered species in Mkuze Game Reserve, in South Africa, but there’s a particular urgency to this morning’s start. And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. Her concern was well founded.

We birders don’t always like to ruminate on missed birds, for some of us the wounds are worn too close to the surface. For starters, Costa’s is a desert species and we were primarily up in the mountains. But I happen to think that those stories are better than the ones with happy endings. And I wanted the complete set.

Among the Efe (Pygmy) people that I lived with in the 1980s, the young men would in fact disappear from the bosom of their families and spend a lot of time, perhaps months, living on their own in the forest. We are seeing the beginnings of a mass extinction in birder’s resources and at the same time the rise of new species.

Europe… with such low herp diversity the locals split any sub-population of a species that occurs on either the Iberian Peninsula or Italy as a new species just to make them feel better out themselves, naturally is the continent that rose to the top of my trip list. Either that or having family friends in Germany.

Security is taken very seriously in the aviation business and discretion is better than having to explain yourself to tightly wound security personnel. Families spend their quality time together on Thursday evenings and Fridays, so parks and open spaces become very busy. Entry to the park is AED3, through one of 3 gates.
