We tried to sight and count the pack twice every day so that if any of the dogs got snared we’d know quickly and could get a vet in to dart them, free them and clean up the wound. Like other social animals, his family connections were keeping him alive, as his family was feeding him.

The interesting thing is that it was not a first time, when David saved poor animals out of a fire: ten years before he has already taken a wounded dog after the fire to the North Shore Animal League, where he was cured. Three of them are alive even today and one has died from cancer in the same 2008.

After the castle we wound our way through the Black Forest where we were able to watch a pair of Eurasian Three-toed Woodpeckers foraged a few feet in front of us. At the city castle I was able to watch, from a distance, a Hawfinch foraging on the ground.

Back in the olden days of the family farm we never knew about the occurrence of food-related illness because we did not have a way of tracking it.
