Just beyond a fence, a pair of rhino adults and one baby munched contentedly on hay. On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass. Multiple varieties of ungulates jogged from place to place, while giant rhea birds stalked around looking for food.

Generally the large family herds of buffalo are peaceful, but the old bulls (called “dagga” boys, “dagga” being a Zulu word for “mud” since they are often covered with the substance after their long wallows) who have left the herds tend to be furious with life in general and anyone they can smash in particular.

Odd family trees, the Hippopotamus is closely related to whales, dolphins and porpoises, the elephant is closely related to manatees, dougongs (reasonable), and the little rock hyrax, yes a little mountain loving hamster is related to the thickest b h in the land, also horses are closely related to rhinos and tapirs.

After a few hours we guesstimated that the pack had moved south and after checking the shooting range (where the park rangers tasked with the unenviable responsibility of protecting the park’s rhinos practised their art) we joined the road to the less touristy southern part of the park.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. We are nearing the waterhole, and see the large oval shadow in the darkness: that White Rhino cow with a calf. The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.
