Last month, I wrote about hypothesized relationships between passerines, parrots, falcons, and seriemas , noting a need for further research on the subject. Long-toed Lapwing , Ashy Tit , Black-backed Cisticola , Lizard Buzzard , Meyer’s Parrot and Southern Black Tit were just some of my rewards (these were my lifers that day). I ended up scoring four lifers: African Dusky Flycatcher , Village Weaver , Whyte Barbet and Zebra Waxbill. It’s such a great place for birds.

Arriving at Bilyuin Pool the first time in May we were soon greeted by a family of Australian Magpies keen to see if we were prepared to hand over anything-NO! Australian Magpie family. The edges of the pool were active with Black-fronted Dotterels , Red-kneed Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Zebra Finch coming down to drink.

About halfway between Marymount Road and Upper Thomson Road we had the pleasure of sitting and observing Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots. Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. Singapore is a great place to enjoy the woodpecker family. We were surprised that it had taken until this day to find Coconut Lorikeets. Banded Woodpecker.

They used Great T**s from non-urban and urban areas, and mixed them up through breeding, to rule out any possible family history of telomere length. In this study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of juvenile zebra finches was allowed to interact with an adult.

Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. Crested Pigeons and Diamond Doves flew across the track in search of water and there were also Zebra Finch and Long-tailed Finch. There have been Crimson Chats on the track as well, but they appear to have dispersed now.

We were surprised to observe Zebra Finch , because there did not appear to be any water, but they could have been accessing water on the station and coming to the crater for food. It is of course the food of the Night Parrot , but none were observed on this occasion! Heading around the rim. The rim trail. Grevillea refracta.
