Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. We have several quail-dove species in Costa Rica, this one is only found in cloud forest here and in western Panama. It does range into western Panama but is far from easy there (nor in Costa Rica for that matter).

In other words, millions of people got together with family and friends for a cozy day of mashed potatoes, gravy, apple pie, naps, football, and some serious turkeyliciousness. The turkeys I’m talking about up in here are three of the five members of the Cracidae family that occur in Costa Rica.

This does not include the various changes made to Latin names, taxonomic ordering, nor changes to families.: Split from the Three-striped Warbler of South America, yet another species is added to the list of birds only found in the mountains of Costa Rica and Panama. Spot-bellied Bobwhite bites the dust. A new endemic foliage-gleaner!

In addition to Spanish, several other languages continue to be spoken, the pines and cypress trees of the Guatemalan highlands only occur as introduced species once you travel south of Nicaragua, and dozens of bird species that occur in Costa Rica and Panama don’t even make it to Nicaragua. The conservation need is urgent: great attention has rightly been paid to Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest but not enough resources have gone to the Pantanal and the Cerrado, of which only 4% and 5%, respectively, are protected. Each family of birds has a short introductory paragraph and most genera get a sentence or two of description.
