There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

I can’t help noticing that you’ve just posted an angry story about Cecil the Lion on your timeline. And that lions are really cute. Tell me, what happens if we rip away hunting when hunting protects more wildlife land in Africa than national parks? Ah, you’ve blocked me. I’m sorry.

I wasn’t there to birdwatch, however, I was volunteering with Wildlife ACT, a conservation organisation that provides science monitoring to the parks of Zululand in South Africa (and increasingly, beyond). In the mornings, and I use that term loosely, we would set out to monitor the Lions. But the wildlife and scenery was epic.

And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. Those collars save lives.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park. Enchanted Lion Books, 2012. One of the secrets to their involvement were the wonderful illustrations by Patrick Benson.
