Guyana had been suffering from an extensive period of drought when we visited, this lack of water ultimately was the primary reason which prevented us from searching for the Harpy Eagle. Another cotinga that is arguably the most popular member of that family – for its voice more so than its looks – is the Screaming Piha.

We had a blast, the family and I, and experienced some amazing natural places, to say nothing of the fine city of Seattle. We traveled from sea level to mountain ranges, port towns to wilderness areas, industrial wastelands to manicured parks. wildflowers at Olympic National Park (click for a bigger view) Was it a wonderful trip?

The meat industry loves to squeal that “the cost of bacon will rise” whenever it’s faced with pressure to change. I served on the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production, which released a report in 2008 that detailed exactly how much these “efficiencies” are costing America. That sounds like a win-win to us.

And I really would have like to know what happens to that land when the industry goes. Animal rights is concerned with individual animals, and their suffering and welfare. I really am sorry that you couldn’t allow a tiny shade of grey into your world of black and white.

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). Both are part of what one paper calls the Brown Hawk Owl complex – something that is much less objectionable than the military-industrial complex but (at least to me) not really a lot more interesting.

Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. to live out their lives in peace, absent the abuse they had suffered in the entertainment industry. Paul’s family noticed that whenever he was about to have an attack, Tinker would get agitated.
