I’ve been told that you can regularly find yourself in some pretty exceptional shorebirding in North Carolina as you get closer to the coast. With large numbers of shorebirds present, the falcons came. For we birders in the more populous but less birdy Piedmont region of that state, the shorebirding is hit and miss.

The Delmarva Peninsula juts southward towards North Carolina like the appendix of the eastern seaboard. All three species of expected falcon, including lots of big, beautiful Peregrines like the young bird above were everywhere. Perhaps the most impressive movement I personally witnessed were the Red-breasted Nuthatches.

Life Birds at Point Reyes National Seashore

Normally the lighthouse is obscured in fog, but when we arrived the air was crystal clear, and in addition to seeing groups of Gray Whales migrating past, I spotted hundreds of Surf Scoters , a Pigeon Guillemot , and a pair of Peregrine Falcons from my perch atop the lighthouse cliff. Lately, I have been waking up to the vocal antics of Laughing Falcon , the newly split Gray-cowled Wood-Rail , Grayish Saltator , Melodious Blackbird , and this beautiful male Blue Grosbeak that sings about a block away.

It looks like the illustrations were created with colored chalk on sandpaper, a terrific idea that didn’t occur to me till I noticed that the authors thank a woodworking shop in North Carolina for “quality sandpaper for the illustrations” I wish they had provided more information about this aspect of the book’s creation.
