The “Rufa” Red Knot is now protected under the Endangered Species Act

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia. Birds in Delaware Bay.

For instance, #400 for is Peregrine Falcon , which I first spotted in the Florida Keys. For many birders it may be hard to believe that I could have seen 399 species of birds in North America and none of them had been a Peregrine Falcon, but it’s just one of the strange ways birding plays out.

What to Expect when Birding Costa Rica at Virgen del Socorro

Get on the plane anywhere from North Carolina to Texas or Florida and we are talking three to four hours. Lately, I have been waking up to the vocal antics of Laughing Falcon , the newly split Gray-cowled Wood-Rail , Grayish Saltator , Melodious Blackbird , and this beautiful male Blue Grosbeak that sings about a block away.

The Delmarva Peninsula juts southward towards North Carolina like the appendix of the eastern seaboard. All three species of expected falcon, including lots of big, beautiful Peregrines like the young bird above were everywhere. Something to work on, I guess. The raptors were great fun, though.

Life Birds at Point Reyes National Seashore

Normally the lighthouse is obscured in fog, but when we arrived the air was crystal clear, and in addition to seeing groups of Gray Whales migrating past, I spotted hundreds of Surf Scoters , a Pigeon Guillemot , and a pair of Peregrine Falcons from my perch atop the lighthouse cliff. White-crowned Sparrow.
