I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track. The river at the top is the Columbia , which forms much of the border between Oregon and Washington. A Google Maps image is below that, for those unfamiliar with the area.

Specifically, the coastal temperate rainforest of Oregon and Washington. This photo is from Mexico, not Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. But for me, one of the best reasons to go is to experience the cool stillness of its pines and firs, and the silence of being so far from civilization.

In other words, eBird is effectively a complete history of my birding experiences. A checklist from Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C. The places I expected ( Pillar Point Harbor in California and Ridgefield NWR in Washington) are right at the top of the list, but even places I thought I’d been to countless times have modest numbers.

All twitchers will experience it at some stage or another. A Eurasian Dotterel had been reported from Ocean Shores, Washington. First time left Bandon Oregon late morning. Next day from Corvallis, Oregon. Destination: Ilwaco, Washington. That most dreaded of disappointments. The bird in question? hours back.
