Chum monkeys are those who are paid to keep the chum flying off the back of the boat.* In my limited experience on pelagic trips, which are almost entirely off the coast of New York State, I can say that Northern Gannets will willingly fly right into the midst of a chum scrum, sometimes even plunge-diving very close to the boat.

The Latin species name vermiculatus (worm-like) refers to the markings on the upperparts. “Arrow-Marked Babblers move around in gangs of a dozen or so, like troops of monkeys or wild dogs, constantly chattering among themselves. In my experience, parrots form a visibly and numerically important component of the Brazilian bird fauna. Brazilians call it sabia-cica in reference to its thrush-like song. Brazil, in particular, is the country with the largest number of parrot species in the world with approximately 84 species.

My personal favorites are the images that show the relationships that are at the heart of this book–a Linneated Woodpecker perched opposite a bromeliad on an exposed tree, Azteca ants on a cecropia tree whose decaying parts provide food, and, a little distressingly, two Capuchin Monkeys feeding on a Toucan (thanks to James Adams).

Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. By the end of my time as researcher, I was performing behavioral experiments on humans.

The Nonggang Babbler ‘s claim to fame is having only been discovered in 2008 (as a meaningless reference, it should be added that the first iPhone was released in 2007, one year earlier). Spot the reference? ) Presumably, Grey-throated Babblers are not very fond of monkeys, especially the (potentially misnamed) Grey Leaf Monkey.
