It’s always fun to add another life bird to your list, especially when you get to share the experience with several birding friends. We all birded the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge after leaving the cemetery. They were very excited about spotting this guy on the way back to Sacramento.

As I always do on the way home, following a short visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, I take in at least one of the National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) found in the Sacramento Valley. I usually stop at the two refuges that have easily accessed auto tour routes, the Sacramento NWR and Colusa NWR.

He lives in Sacramento with his wife and daughter, and enjoys county birding throughout the state. To enhance the experience, I recommend acquiring a bottle or two of Merlot and inviting some non-birding friends over. In this heat, the spoils randomly fell to Clifford Hawley.

I didn’t really have time to stop, but as I was passing by, I saw hundreds of American White Pelicans fly up and thought I’d better take a drive through and see what else was there.

Given my west coast experience, I have made dedicated birding trips to several of the more predictable birding hotspots. I mention these trips because, along with other trips and experiences closer to home, they inform my research into my future birding travel. Geography is destiny. 188 for that location and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge : Expand big game hunting. Why are they still allowed in the United States?

Indeed, can you truly experience the wonder of nature from the confines of a vehicle? This stoked Great Egret was at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA. Always, always, have binoculars and camera within reach when you are driving around on a birding trip. And if you are wondering…there was no happy ending for the rodent.
