Kooyman was there to work at McMurdo Station (a large American research station that we hear about throughout the book) as technical assistant on a science mission involving fish. He leaves enchanted by two mammals, the Emperor Penguin and the Weddell Seal, the only mammals who totally live their whole lives, year-round, in the Antarctic.

The selections appear to largely reflect Hauber’s personal experiences around the world and he does occasionally bring himself into the essay, reflecting on a European Robin he observes at dusk in northwestern Germany or searching for American Robin nests on a tree farm in the Midwestern United States.

This is a cruise like no other, full of scientific lectures, over forty guides spread out on deck, bird-themed parties, and a lights-off mandate to protect birds at night. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. Regardless, we made it Marion and all else added to the experience. Salvin’s Prion.

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. In the unloved “Other” section of today’s post, we have a few more mammals. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. Drongos feed more effectively when in such flocks, so the benefits go both ways.

This was the local name meaning “ugly” used for these primates by the people of the Gonder area in northern Ethiopia when the German naturalist Rüppell “discovered” this species for science in the 1830’s. they are the most terrestrial primate after humans.
