An experiment in which anesthetized pigs were buried alive in snow to learn how humans live or die in avalanches was halted today in Austria after animal-rights groups denounced the research as cruel and useless. The two-week experiment involving 29 pigs began Tuesday in the Western Austrian Alps. From USA Today.

But it's also remarkable in that Roger Cohen, a 50-something man who writes for the New York Times, wonders: But do pigs have any more or less of a soul than dogs? They did not experiment on primates (I asked!), but did experiment on mice and guinea pigs. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). Riddle me this: Why would any human animal use as a default position that nonhuman animals do not have personalities as rich, distinct, obnoxious, obsequious and varied as human animals? Why is it surprising that nonhuman animals have personalities when human animals do? No one is assigning human traits to nonhumans.

We humans have decided that, for a combination of reasons that are important to us, cats are worthy of our respect. Cats are slaves to no one, at least according to their reputation, which in my experience holds true. We don't say we hate pigs and want to see them writhing in pain and slaughtered. We don't say we hate cows.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. The animals on farms are created for the sole purpose of human consumption. It's not pretty.
