A few minutes ago, I heard an odd clicking noise, looked around, and a ROBIN was chasing a rabbit! The robin was clicking and jumping a few feet on the ground over the rabbit’s back, then it would fly to catch up to it. The rabbit hopped down the ravine to the woods, so I saw the event for only seconds. Any ideas why?

After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. In a more normal sequence of events the sounds would remain unheard, the nestlings trapped, and the parents unable to reach them. Or, too often, the entire section would be tossed into a wood chipper.

Tennessee started a festival around the event, just for wildlife watchers. To me, this is like giving a child a baby rabbit as a birthday present, and then when Harvey proves to be a bit too much to care for, bumping him off in front of her. The state’s response?

Rabbits were introduced to the island by guano miners, which turned the previously verdant island into a giant sand dune; almost all vegetation was wiped out. They were secure in their isolated home here until humanity came to Laysan in the 1890s. Three other endemic bird species promptly went extinct, and by 1911 as few as 11 ducks remained.
