In any event, this round of H5N2 outbreaks is expected to slow down and stop soon, as the migrations wind down. This is the first finding in the Mississippi flyway. It is not clear to me if the numerous cases of infection are all explained by wild to domestic bird transmission, or if some of the farms were cross-contaminated.

The only unusual event that occurred this year that seems to match up nicely with the Florida invasion is Hurricane Sandy, an incredibly large and nearly unprecedented storm that hit the mid-Atlantic and New England in late October. For the time being, Florida birders are being treated to a (hopefully) once in a life time event.

321 – Brown Pelican , 13 October 2019: Getting a new Queens bird during my favorite event of the year – The Big Sit – was so much awesome that my head nearly exploded. Swallow-tailed Kite : I had a hard time deciding between this species and Mississippi Kite. So I drank one when I got home. Mmm…beer…mmm.

In the evening, we met up for the official count meeting and as with other bird counts in Costa Rica, this one was well organized and a semi-event that included coffee, some pastries, a count tee-shirt (showing a creeping Yellow-breasted Crake!), A creeping Yellow-breasted Crake from another day.
