I won’t pick a fight with hunters, as long as they eat what they shoot and don’t use lead ammunition. Here is a direct (and unedited) quote: “… keep in mind the main reason why experienced crow hunters got into the sport in the first place, Fun. I am not anti-hunting. Plain old fashioned Fun.”. This is baloney.

Tennessee started a festival around the event, just for wildlife watchers. As Vickie reminds us, not even a majority of Tennessee hunters support a hunting season on Sandhill Cranes : Once again, a proposed sandhill crane season is on the table in Tennessee. The initiative for this hunt comes from a small group of hunters.

Habitat destruction is probably the biggest threat to birds, but here we are talking more about specific birdicide events rather than the larger scale problem of humans simply taking the planet away from everybody else. I would not expect this effect to be very large though. What are other human causes of bird death?

The results will inform a vision document to be adopted in July 2011 at a national conference to guide the NWR system for wildlife protection into the next decade and beyond. I’ve long advocated for a habitat stamp strickly for birders as some of us don’t want to be labeled as hunters.
