Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty. But it is most probable that the birds are released or escaped pets. There are a lot of pet psittacines out there that escape or are released.

They are part of the scarab beetle complex and over 300 species have been described, occurring not only in Africa but also Europe, Asia and the Americas. In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets! They are harmless to humans and their horns are used for wrestling other males for mating rights.

That was a wild cat, a wild Wildcat, the cat that lives in the wild because that is where it is from and where it belongs, at the southern end of its pan-African range that extended at one time well into Europe and Asia. This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing.

Europe has one species (Eurasian Spoonbill), the Americas have one (Roseate Spoonbill), Australia two (Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill), and Asia has two as well (Eurasian and Black-faced Spoonbill). The benefit for the wasps is that they get to keep a beautiful pet. But this is too interesting a bird not to show.

This strange but beautifully plumaged bird was widely known throughout Europe as the Waldrapp (meaning “Forest Crow”).
