Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge : Expand big game hunting. The refuge is already open to migratory bird hunting, upland game hunting, and sport fishing. The Sacramento River NWR was established 1989 by the authority provided under the Endangered Species Act, Emergency Wetlands Resources Act, and the Fish and Wildlife Act.

Even our local Greater Sage Grouse , which now are receiving a huge effort at habitat protection, and restoration, were just those really cool birds out in the desert. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act.

All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. Increased scrutiny of practices long considered the norm in wildlife management, including predator hunts, commercial trapping, the legal culling of non-game birds like American Crows, and some of the research protocols used to track and translocate wild animals. All attempts to domesticate wild animals should be discouraged.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. That’s what you do with other game, right? Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.
