All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. 2022 gave me a fair share of wonderful birds and birding experiences. Those kept me below the 700 species threshhold but I won’t complain about 691 species. I looked in some of the right places but failed to connect. Bare-necked Umbrellabird – Any view of this endangered species is a major event.

It’s the warbler that is often the last unchecked species on birders’ life lists and, whether you list or not, for most of us observing it is a once in a lifetime experience. Fish and Wildlife Service endangered species list. The warbler is on the road to being delisted from the Endangered Species List.

The experience was marvelous — but it also weighed heavily on me. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again. It is correct, of course, to think of extinction this way during the Holocene Extinction, which we are living through right now. That’s one of my photos above. What a horror! What a disaster!

Thankfully, the adult sandhill crane has had a right-on-schedule recovery, and he just so happened to make a friend while doing so. The Cuban sandhill and Mississippi sandhill are both subspecies of cranes that are listed as endangered and are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
