Many animals also display wide-ranging emotions, including joy, happiness, empathy, compassion, grief, and even resentment and embarrassment. It’s not surprising that animals—especially, but not only, mammals—share many emotions with us because we also share brain structures—located in the limbic system—that are the seat of our emotions.

Finally, getting to the slightly annoying but somehow obligatory mention of mammals seen at Longcanggou. Among all mammals, I think I like monkeys the least. Bird guide Bella remarked that the haircut of this Tufted Deer “looks stupid” Always good to travel with a highly qualified expert for valuable scientific comments.

Non-human beings have traditionally thought of on a basically immoral level…they lack any intrinsic values, are incapable of thoughts and emotions, and are only worth how good of a coat they make or how good they taste. Many of today’s most prominent religions have perpetuated this view.

My hands-on experience is with small mammals/critters and cats. In many ways, they are probably easier to change because they don't have the same emotional baggage. I learned a lot from this episode. I don't know much about dogs other than what I read. I think food aggression is just an excuse to make space for the next animal.

Like other mammals, they are capable of strong emotions. If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. But chimpanzees can abstract. They have certainly committed no crimes.

Just to be clear, this book deals with the nonhuman animals who are most like us: social vertebrates, and specifically social mammals (and there are a handful of references to cetaceans who behave similarly). But as the frequently-invoked Darwin would say, those differences are of degree, not kind.
