Scientific research shows that many animals are very intelligent and have sensory and motor abilities that dwarf ours. Many animals also display wide-ranging emotions, including joy, happiness, empathy, compassion, grief, and even resentment and embarrassment. In many ways, human emotions are the gifts of our animal ancestors.

I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. I recently was escorted through a large primate research laboratory by its director. Just to be clear, this book deals with the nonhuman animals who are most like us: social vertebrates, and specifically social mammals (and there are a handful of references to cetaceans who behave similarly). But as the frequently-invoked Darwin would say, those differences are of degree, not kind.

Non-human beings have traditionally thought of on a basically immoral level…they lack any intrinsic values, are incapable of thoughts and emotions, and are only worth how good of a coat they make or how good they taste. I look forward to more research being done in this field. Science, for many years, has done no better.

They are large passerines and research has shown them to be an ancient basal offshoot from the passerine tree (at approximately the same time as rockjumpers, were even placed in the same family until quite recently). Then a few years ago the news broke that picathartes had been rediscovered at a community forest reserve in Ghana.
