Laysan albatrosses are ocean-dwelling seabirds who have 6-foot wingspans, weigh 7-8 pounds, occasionally sleep while flying, and rarely land except to raise their chicks. The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. Who suffers for these crimes? Sentencing for Gutierrez is July 6.

While having somebody else raise your chicks like an attractive strategy to me, it is not without dangers. A paper reports on how a female Common Cuckoo was mobbed and killed by Oriental Reed Warbler hosts. The photos of the dead cuckoo published in the paper would not look out of place in a horror movie for a cuckoo audience.

We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. But in birds they eat living tissue, and once they are internal will kill the patient. An area on her abdomen the size and shape of a pie pan was open. If she was willing, we would not fail her.

There are two approaches a vegetarian might take in arguing that rearing and killing animals for food is morally offensive. He might argue that eating animals is morally bad because of the pain inflicted on animals in rearing and killing them to be eaten. Or he could object to the killing itself.

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. The overwhelming passage in November of Proposition 2 in California, which banned tight confinement of many of the animals raised for food, is a fine example of the power of publicity to educate people about the atrocities we commit to those animals who have no voice of their own.

There was no meaningful discussion about our inefficient use of resources (grain and water) in the feeding of animals to kill to feed people. With regard to cruelty and suffering, it's clear from the film that the human animal has been profoundly negatively affected by climate change, but there is no attention given to nonhuman animals.

If a genetically engineered animal’s legs periodically fell off, would not its legs be more like a product of an animal (analogous to eggs) than a part of the animal? These people abstain from eggs and dairy products the production of which involves suffering for the animals. Would the blood be analogous to milk or eggs?
