They emerged from their bloody rampage leaving fifteen adults dead, and fifteen destroyed nests with either smashed or missing eggs. They were simply sent to Family Court. Between the adults and their eggs, the three of them killed 32 live albatrosses. At the time, Justice and Mesker were 17 years old. Gutierrez was 18.

Pheasant-tailed Jacana courtship dance

A bright flash of white caught my attention in this lilly-choked wetland Closer investigation revealed a stunning male Pheasant-tailed Jacana perched atop a female. Whilst we are on the subject of jacanas and their mating behavior, it is worth noting that this family of birds (as well as phalaropes and painted-snipes) is polyandrous.

Northern Cable Beach birding

Last weekend we went by vehicle to check on the Pied Oystercatchers that breed along that stretch of beach and there has been continued egg loss over the past few weeks. They are persistent at laying eggs and despite the loss of all the eggs from our last visit there were five new eggs. Pied Oystercatcher shading an egg.

In Grey-backed Shrikes (at least those breeding on the Tibetan plateau), the eggs laid during one breeding attempt get larger with time – presumably an attempt to at least partly overcome the disadvantages the last chick faces ( source ). The site states that in captivity, “two hens can be paired with one male.”
