Queen of Spain Fritillary , photographed in mid November Clouded yellow – another common November butterfly For the autumn or winter visitor, the biggest draw is the flock of Lesser Whitefronted Geese that in recent years have been regular and reliable wintering birds on the lake. Such an abundance of wildfowl attracts Peregrines.

There was a Short-toed Eagle ahead, taking flight to be replaced by another ST Eagle. At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. What is killing them? Immediately north of it I found another Short-toed Eagle and a very cooperative close-range Long-legged Buzzard. Lesser Kestrel.

A Great Egret , a few Pygmy Cormorants and, by the middle of the Danube, about a hundred Greylag Geese. Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us.

Greylag Geese. Soon I hit the brakes for a 60 strong flock of Greylag Geese of the Siberian race rubrirostris grazing near the road. Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. eBird hotspots of Prespa lakes. Practicalities.

We went to settle into our room, and since I had about an hour to kill before dinner, I took a quick walk around the property. Still, there are plenty of other birds and animals to see along the way, including Glaucous and other gulls, geese, herds of sheep and Icelandic horses. Finally, we arrived at the Hotel Latrabjarg to check in.

Near the sand dunes, the first “V” made out of a hundred or so Greater White-fronted Geese , They spend the night on the water and in the morning they spread over arable fields to forage; but most of them do so at the crack of dawn and these 100 must have overslept. No one calls it a river any more, nowadays it is known as the DTD canal.
