Where a birder goes in the Caribbean determines which birds are seen including toy-like todies, Carib hummingbirds, cool pigeons, quail-doves, unique avian families and outrageous woodpeckers. One such special place is the Centro Manu, a small family run reserve that features several star bird species of Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands.

A birder needs access to large areas of mature forest that also offer up chances at seeing glittering flocks of tanagers, checking out the tail bobbing behavior of cool antbirds, and glassing a hawk-eagle or two. This is what a Black Hawk-Eagle shape looks like. Yellow-naped Parrot. Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Wrenthrush.

And of course, two raptors that are a part of North American birding history: the Great Black Hawk of Portland and the Steller’s Sea-eagle of Boothbay Harbor and other local areas. ( I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

In other words, millions of people got together with family and friends for a cozy day of mashed potatoes, gravy, apple pie, naps, football, and some serious turkeyliciousness. The turkeys I’m talking about up in here are three of the five members of the Cracidae family that occur in Costa Rica.

Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Capuchinbird, Red Fan Parrot, Guianan Toucanet, White Bellbird, Grey-winged Trumpeters, Black Currasow. The Nikon’s BATV crew flew in to Paramaribo where we were graciously hosted at the luxurious Hotel Krasnapolsky for a night so that we could experience the culture and fun of the capital city.

Recent publicity about these remarkable tribes has resulted in tourists wanting to experience this wild land and its attractions for themselves. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

The Checklist is more than a taxonomic listing of species and chapter number and title; it also contains useful notes on each bird family.
