In the UK, we have a long-running soap series called ‘Coronation Street’ A set of three flying ducks graced the muriel (sic) on the wall of Hilda Ogden’s back room at No.13, Greatly loved by Hilda, she credits the ducks and her scenic wall, for keeping her ‘hand from the gas tap’ on her bad days.

Nice weather, as they say, for ducks. It’s relatively small as ducks go, and certainly doesn’t have stunning plumage, but it is fairly attractive and has a distinctive white ring around the eye which helps distinguish it from the closely related Chestnut Teal of Australia. Almost fully grown young bird.

Islands, for various reasons, experience more extinctions than continents (with Africa being the only continent not suffering a bird extinction!). This is particularly poignant if the bird has disappeared during the course of my birding days or “on my watch” as I like to think of it.

Well, the unsavory reputation of Australia’s fauna suffered another setback last week, though the conduct of the creature at issue wasn’t so much deadly as just plain rude. The quacker in question was named Ripper, a drake Musk Duck raised at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve near Canberra.

The haunting call of the West Indian Whistling Duck has long been a sound synonymous with the ever-shrinking wetlands of the Caribbean. The whistling duck call carries with it the crimes of big business, the failures of governments and the ignorance of irresponsible hunters. They are also the rarest. Until recently.

As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. This allows you to watch birds (well, at least those that are not too noise sensitive) while not having to suffer their sounds. The one for bird photographers (a Spot-billed Duck ) is shown below.
