“This beautiful and singular bird, although a constant resident in the southern extremities of the peninsula of Florida, seldom extends its journeys in an eastern direction beyond the State of North Carolina. I picked up a few bottles and we were off on our way home to Albany.

There are four scenic overlooks, a woodpecker viewing area, a migratory duck pond, and access to The Appalachian Trail. Considered ‘undeveloped’ as a park, the habitat diversity here is some of the best in North America. Grandfather Mountain State Park, North Carolina. Sky Meadows State Park, Virginia. American Kestrel.

Turns out, Monday brought more than a little rain, and we got soaked as we explored the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge along the ocean. Our last and final stop was the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, one of my favorite birding spots. Maritime forest.

A pelagic out of Hatteras, North Carolina , the Biggest Week in American Birding in Ohio , and trip to Puerto Rico stand out as well. For me, there was the Limpkin in Loxahatchee NWR in Florida, the Atlantic Puffin at Petit Manan NWR in Maine, the Falcated Duck at Colusa NWR in California.

I haven’t even been to all of the best national wildlife refuges for birding. I’ve also been on pelagic birding trips on both coasts, out of Half Moon Bay and Monterey, California; Newport, Oregon; and Hatteras, North Carolina. Indeed, eBird tells me that I have yet to submit a checklist from approximately 20 states.

My friend Paul Taillie and I had to meet an intrepid bunch of birders for the inaugural Outer Banks Big Day field trip at the Wings Over Water festival in eastern North Carolina. We were setting the bar for what someone hitting all the good spots on North Carolina’s famous barrier islands could reasonably accomplish.
