While I have visited a few birding sites around the Netherlands during the course of my Bachelor studies, I did not go birding a lot around the city where I lived, Maastricht. Greater Scaup The female was rather shy, but I was happy to compare it to the many Tufted Ducks that were around as well.

Birding Ijmuiden Pier in Late October

The pier in Ijmuiden, a coastal town west of Amsterdam, is a popular sea-watching site in the Netherlands as it allows one to get further out than from the beach. It is an excellent site in the winter months in particular, when seabirds including ducks, divers and grebes are quite reliable here.

However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). While driving along the Trekvaart canal I spotted hundreds of Tufted Duck with a nice sprinkling of Smew , Common Pochard and Common Goldeneye.

Birding on Texel in Late October

Bohemian Waxwing The morning of my second day was partly devoted to a Long-tailed Duck in the Mokbaai at the island’s southern tip. A few Bohemian Waxwings were also a great addition to my life-list and a long-awaited bird. They were feeding in a small tree in the village of De Koog and were very approachable.

The situation was still much the same in 1995, when a friend and I went on a short birding trip to the Netherlands in winter, specifically to see geese. The Netherlands were far away. Of course I considered it to have been blown there from the Netherlands. Still, this was not much of an issue, nothing we discussed.

I also got to spend a few hours in the Netherlands. Hybrid dabbling duck , Rieselfelder Münster, Germany. Also high on my list of favourite birds for 2016 is a hybrid dabbling duck whose parentage I have yet to find out. Marsh Sandpiper , Den Oever, Netherlands. But … GREAT BUSTARDS!!
