We’ve worked to change the dialogue around the Duck Stamp in public discussions and meetings, and we’ve reached out to Refuge officials and conservation officers to argue for the viability of this concept.

Northern Pintails at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex offers four photo blinds on three of their refuges which can be reserved, two on the Sacramento Refuge, one at Colusa NWR and one at Delevan NWR. This blind in particular is usually good for ducks, geese, waders and shorebirds. This is what blind #2 at the Sacramento NWR looks like.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of April 2016)

I don’t know which legislative branch to appeal to, but there ought to be a law that mandates life birds on a birder’s birthday. I spent several hours of an otherwise excellent weekend dipping multiple times on a rare ABA Tufted Duck. Perhaps we should require lifers on anyone’s birthday. Sure beats cake!

The Marsh Wren Singing and Gathering Nesting Material

The male shown in the video above, filmed at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, was in the process of gathering nesting material for what usually adds up to a dozen to two dozen nests! It is obvious to me that the male Marsh Wrens at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge are getting ready for the females to visit their breeding territories.
