I’ve been leading a small but faithful group on Trinidad for several years to count birds within a livestock farm that is generally restricted to the public (you can read about some of those shenanigans here ); this was the first time I was to embark on a CBC on the smaller island of Tobago. Anyway, I digress. Mangrove Cuckoo.

Trinidad Colorado is located just a few miles north of the Colorado – New Mexico border, and home to the Trinidad Reservoir. Jeanne and I parked the 5th wheel in the Trinidad Lake Campground, and found it to be perhaps the nicest campground we had ever been in. This all mixed in with a very nice bunch of birds.

This Black-bellied Whistling Duck was on its way to visit its mate and young brood further afield in the same pond but made a detour. Did the Black-bellied Whistling Duck represent his family, “showing face” as we say here in the Caribbean? Apologies for excluding them from this carousel. Spotted Sandpiper. Paying respects?

Not many birds showed, but thankfully my little group of enthusiastic birders were happy with Purple Gallinules , Wattled Jacanas , and a single pair of Least Grebes. What struck me immediately upon arrival was the sheer number of ducks. The birds were already out and about, and so were the mosquitoes!

Just under a fortnight ago, I saw a report on the local bird alert of a sighting of a group of approximately 20 Nacunda Nighthawks at a wetland not more than 20 minutes from where I live. Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many.

The roadmap out of lockdown here in the UK has allowed us to meet up in small groups to indulge in outdoor activities, so birders have been gathering in loose flocks to greet the migrants as they head north.

In June 2012, I had the great fortune to visit Trinidad and Tobago in a group that included birder and artist Matthew Dodder. There was often a goodly description of how to draw a Duck step-by-step also. But what if one needed to draw a Diving Duck and not a Mallard , or compose a bird not shown in the book at all…?
