According to the HBW, they mainly eat fish. Its closest living relatives are the Chinese and the Japanese grosbeak of East Asia” The main difference is that I have seen the hawfinch – but only the hawfinch – in both my parents’ garden in Germany and in Shanghai. Can’t say I heard this though.

Several Ferruginous Duck and one surprising male Goosander , four Glossy Ibises , Common Kingfishers , Eurasian Hopooes , a high note of a Penduline Tit somewhere from the willows along the canal, Eurasian Spoonbills , European Turtle Doves gently purrring …. Below legal size for humans is still legal for pelicans.

I’d like a beer too, please, as I have never seen a Masked Duck. Predictably, it contained few surprises (and no lifers either) as Germany took lock-down regulations seriously and travel, even locally, was next to impossible throughout most of the year. There is no “masked” anything here in Germany.

I have caught a bus across Europe, but I can’t really claim to have “been” to Germany or Belgium. Perched high above the river were a number of birds of prey, including the one with the most evocative call of the African bush, the African Fish-eagle. In particular, there are lots of waterbirds. Water Thick-knees.
