The origin of this expression clearly lies in the slow, dopey waddling gait of a duck on land.

Winter Birding in Bonn

As my parents live in Bonn in Germany, I have been birding a few times in some spots surrounding the city when visiting them over the last few years, including the Siegaue (riverine and grassy habitats) and the Siebengebirge (mainly forest). I have also heard Tawny Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl at night.

Springtime in Bonn

I was rewarded with nice scope views of Eurasian Eagle-Owls – by no means a surprise sighting as these birds breed here. Eurasian Eagle-Owl The Rheinaue park close to our appartment was also productive again. The more interesting ducks mainly pass through in winter, and now all the action appears to be on the terrestrial side.

Now, try to imagine Germany having Joseph Goebbels as a Chancellor around the year 1970, more than quarter of a century after WWII – unimaginable, isn’t it? Why should something so unimaginable in Germany be possible in Serbia? He started his political career as Slobodan Milosevic’s Minister of Propaganda. Protest indeed!
