The first step was to download The Warbler Guide Song and Call Companion files, which are in MP3 format, from the Macaulay Library website to the iTunes program on my computer. The Companion files should be downloadable to other mobile devices, just be aware that the focus here is on using iTunes.

They are big, expensive and it can take up to five years to attract them even if you have the right habitat. If you do not have the right habitat or are unwilling to maintain it, it can become a very expensive House Sparrow nesting colony. You can get it as a cassette, CD or even download an mp3 of it.

At the same time, one Black Stork wades through the shallows, right next to the road. BirdLife Greece has recently published the Greek bird finder, available online as pdf and downloadable as an android smartphone application. This time we stop by the yellow bouy – again, that is as close as we are allowed to go.

The clean, easy and modern Subway/Metro system here is known as the SMRT (map, and fare/time calculator link) and there is a station at the airport (Google Earth cut and paste ref; 1°21’27.49″N 103°59’20.64″E ( If you don’t already have Google Earth, it can be downloaded for free at this link )). This meant that the app I had downloaded to my phone, Sasol eBirds of Southern Africa , produced by mydigitalearth.com, was the same as the book I had brought, which was not my intent.The app itself was excellent–easy to use, comprehensive, and relieving me of the burden of carrying a heavy book in my backpack.
