Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Now don’t get me wrong, I like dolphins. And dolphins can do bad things.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

I went out with the morning sunrise tour and then came back with the wildlife tour in the afternoon, something they are prepared to do for birders who want to spend time on Blumine Island (if both tours are going anyway). The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet.

Birding has been an all-consuming interest for Patrick Cardwell since boyhood days spent in a wildlife-rich environment. Generally, it is the Antarctic Prion ( desolata ) that occurs sporadically off Cape Point in the winter months, although other species of Prion have also been reported from time to time.
