The two best ways to find it when visiting Costa Rica are: taking a trip to Cocos Island, and watching pelagic seabird flocks associated with tuna and dolphins. The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet. From there we travelled around the island a bit and then another fellow birder Alan and I were dropped on the beach on Blumine. A Bellbird singing.

An endangered species success story, these ungodly cute animals are now thriving after their populations (most Channel Islands have an Island Fox population) scraped against the brink of extinction for years. Aside from birds, people really seem to like Island Foxes. I can’t finish this post without mentioning marine mammals.

Almost as soon as we were clear of the shore we encountered a pod of Short-nosed Common Dolphins and large flocks of Fluttering Shearwaters, Flesh-footed Shearwaters and Buller’s Shearwaters. This didn’t stop me from birding entirely, but I had to periodically lie down until it passed.
