And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. We hadn’t been on the road long before a shout went out that a dog had been seen, and we quickly turned back, and there was my first Painted Wolf in Mkuze.

I wasn’t there to birdwatch, however, I was volunteering with Wildlife ACT, a conservation organisation that provides science monitoring to the parks of Zululand in South Africa (and increasingly, beyond). The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see.

Every time someone buys a puppy or kitten from a breeder, a shelter animal loses its chance at a home and pays with its life. It’s a sign of our indifference.”

Winter Wanderland

After a pleasant morning with ducks, crisp snow and sunshine, we followed the wildlife trail on our way out. We returned home for a good dinner with friends, some wine and a night dreaming of raspberry coulis, puppies and ducks. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote.
