My extensive birding experience allows me to be very confident that the bird below is a Rosefinch. It might be about time for HBW to document this split as well … not sure why they do not update this. He was from the area but had apparently been traveling to India to see the Dalai Lama. It is indeed rufous-ish.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”.

The Black Kite ( Milvus migrans ) is ubiquitous as a scavenger across the whole of India, often seen by the hundred wheeling over towns. As a bittersweet afterthought, it was also the last bird I photographed in India before losing my sponsored travel opportunities. A non-bird Best Bird of the Year? Preposterous!
