Much like Carrie’s recent experiences being hoodwinked by non-bird sources of birdy-sounding calls , I’ve had my share of animal encounters out in the field. In New York and Chicago, they’ve been pretty mundane—a White-tailed Deer here, an Eastern Cottontail rabbit there. Any herpophiles out there have a clue?

There’s a bear! There’s a bear!

At the edge of the forest, above the road, a Roe Deer swiftly disappears between trees. Over the pass, trees turn to pines – one very dark Eurasian Red Squirrel in them – and peaks around us become much higher. inhabitants per km², mainly livestock farmers. A Willow Tit feeds on thistle by the side of the road.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. She has grown up in the reserve and has no experience of the environment of which tourists would not be a permanent, however boring part of.

Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets. monkeys, deer, gazelles, etc.). I clearly needed a mammal book.

We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. We stopped at Rosie’s Diner. Honest food in a fifties’ diner while reminiscing about all those movies you have seen about diners in the fifties. I can recommend it. I ticked off 9 lifers. All bird and animal pictures are Brad’s.
