Somehow, Steller’s Sea Eagle manages to look both fierce and slightly cartoonish. Back to the eagle. Even the review has some interesting information – for example, a major predator of eagle nests is the Brown Bear. They also estimate between 2115 and 2645 individuals traveled to see the eagle.

Wintering Wallcreepers are always a possibility, too, generally in quarries where Eagle Owls are resident. One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed.

Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?) The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season. Easily enough, they got it here.

At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! He has earned his tip.

The reward for the troubles comes in the shape of a Lesser Spotted Eagle circling in a thermal at the opposite side of the meadow, two Stag Beetles ( Lucanus cervus ) engaged in a wrestling match on a low branch, Roe Deer swiftly running across the road… But what are we doing in that meadow?

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across.
