I told Rolando I didn’t feel I was really in Tabasco, because I had yet to see a cow standing in water. Then we saw a cow, standing in water. Bare-throated Tiger-Herons , a rarety elsewhere, are almost a pest here. In an unusual twist, Tiger-Herons get their name from the markings on juveniles and immatures.

A tin yellow tiger is staring at us from the Melghat Tiger Reserve gates, as the narrow tarmac road winds through teak forest ( Tectona grandis ) along the hillside. From the next curve in the road, I can see the cows grazing deep in the valley: “If I was a tiger, I would check my prey from here.”

Great horneds are known as the “Tiger of the Woods&# because they’ll hunt anything and they are good at it, but they are slow and stealthy. He returned less than 30 minutes later with surprising news. The beak was from a House Finch , that didn’t surprise me. But the jawbone…that was from a bat!

Mosethla Bush Camp guide awaits us by the open Land Rover and with a loaded rifle in front of the steering wheel, we continue into the bush (oddly, while observing lions and tigers in India, not a single rifle was in sight). We are nearing the waterhole, and see the large oval shadow in the darkness: that White Rhino cow with a calf.

A bull, cow and calf Cape or African Buffalo in Kruger National Park by Adam Riley (note the attendant Red-billed Oxpeckers!) They are one of the four existing species in the genus Panthera , and with males weighing in at up to 550lbs are second in size only to Tigers.
