And, in a tree off to the right in that direction, I noticed a mass of stuff that resembled a Bald Eagle’s nest as much as any mass of stuff ever could, but of course, it was not a bald eagle nest. Eagles like their nests a bit farther from roads than that. Eagles don’t like being near developed landscapes.

It was loaded with waterfowl – lots of Mallards and Green-winged Teal , a few Gadwalls and Northern Shovelers , a solitary Pintail and an equally lonesome Eared Grebe , and of course tons of my old favorite the American Coot (or as I like to call them, the Devil’s chickens.)

The Great Miami Winter Bird Count, an event that transpired over the course of four days from February 13-16, set out to record this diversity for the first time in an organized manner as part of the overall Miami Birding Wave project. Which Bird Species Have Gone Extinct in Costa Rica?

It seems different enough from Indigo-capped Hummingbird to be a stray of that Colombian endemic, and a good hybrid hypothesis has been elusive. Crested and Harpy Eagles stand out as birds that seem to still be around but in such low numbers that those monster raptors could easily up the extirpated list by two. What a horror!

Another constant problem to be aware of when you are travelling these highways with constant distractions like Wedge-tailed Eagles standing on carcasses are the stray cattle. Of course another danger is the presence of snakes and crocodiles! Cattle can be anywhere!
