When looking for birds in Costa Rica, the Central Valley isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Most days, that seemingly random place is right at home. Range maps show the small bird reaching its northern limits in southern Costa Rica, over there on the other side of the mountains.

We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. Pat ODonnell Mar 9th, 2011 at 10:09 am My Bbest bird for the weekend was a Long-tailed Woodcreeper seen at Carara National Park in Costa Rica. Wicked, right? No time to take a picture.

Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.

My first tropical birding trip was to Costa Rica when I was 8 and the Jabiru was at the top of my list even then, but sadly none were encountered. Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. Wicked, right?
